On the day Facebook went public with its shares — and Zuckerberg purported to be netting at least 25 billion — I continued my summer novel word and page count: four thousand words, eight pages. Today’s session went better than yesterday’s initial run, given I was less nervous and agitated. I am liking what is being produced. I wrote in my journal, during my coffee break (with cigar) that writing a novel means engaging mindfulness. Novels are written a word, a phrase, and a sentence at a time, not with the whole in mind, at least not for initial drafts. In this pointillism the novel is completed full of sound and fury and surprises. Until the final page is done.
